Chisinau is the capital of Moldova situated in the very center of country (also called “the White City”, as many of the older building are of white limestone). The first historic evidence of the name Chisinau goes back to July 17 1436. The name derives from a word meaning “spring”. Chisinau is positioned on the seven hills and stretches over 120 km2    The capital is crossed by two rivers –Bik and Isnovat. Chisinau counts almost one million citizens. It is situated in the area with mild, moderate-continental climate, under the Black Sea nearness influence. The City is divided into 5 sectors: Centre, Buiucani, Botanica, Riscani and Ciocana and has its own flag and coat of arms. The Capital of Moldova

Chisinau is the main administrative, economic, scientific and cultural center of the Republic of Moldova. Its industry has more than 34 500 legal entities, the enterprises of mechanical, apparatus, engineering, electronics, jewelry, light, and food industries, woodworking industry and production of furniture, processing of natural leather and production of artificial leather, printing industry. Many enterprises were converted into limited companies. After the privatization the state enterprises only constitute 5,9 percent of their whole quantity. Many joint ventures have appeared, among their founders - the juridical persons from Germany, Italy, Romania, Bulgaria, Holland, Belgium, Turkey, Russia, Ukraine and Byelorussia. Nowadays the goods produced in Moldova are bought by more than 80 countries of the world. In addition to the wines, produced in Chisinau and Cricova and recognized all over the world and preserved food of vegetables and fruits, the high mark has also been given to vacuum pumps, tractors, TV sets, washing machines, carpets, hosiery articles, sweets, cosmetics and perfume, volatile oils, clothes as well as the wide assortment of the meat and dairy products.

All the banks of the capital (except National Bank) were renewed into commercial and stockholder banks, their total quantity is more than 25 units. Moldovan banks - “Victoriabank”, "Moldova-Agroindbank", “Banka Sociala”, "Moldinconbank" and many others enjoy the confidence and authority in many countries of the world.

Chisinau comprises 18 territorial administrative areas: 1 municipality, 6 towns, 8 communities and 3 villages. There are 133 secondary schools and lyceums in Chisinau, 16 universities and 20 colleges. City has modern stadiums and sport complexes, a racetrack, as well as the famous track for motor races that is considered to be one of the best in Europe. The cultural life is maintained by numerous theatres, museums, concert halls, movie theatres. A big number of hotels and restaurants are at the tourists' disposal. (Starting from 2000, Chisinau City Day is celebrated the 14th of October each year.)

Visit the Open Air Art Market on Stefan cel Mare Avenue. Besides paintings and all sorts of handcrafted items, you  can also buy musical national instruments like flutes.Image

Stefan cel Mare Avenue/Boulevard is the main street in Chisinau, where the most important national administrative buildings are located (the Presidential Palace, the Parliament of Moldova, the Government of Moldiva, Municipal City Administration, the cathedral ensemble/also called Birth of Christ Cathedral Chisinau, the capital of Moldova, the Triumphal Arch, the Stefan cel Mare city park, where you could find the monument of the national hero Stefan the Great/Stefan cel MareStefan the Great and the Alley of Classics/busts of Moldovan writers and many more important things to see) and Cultural centres (National theatre “M. Eminescu”, Organ Hall, Theatre of Opera and Ballet, cinema “Patria”, etc.). There are lots of shops and restaurants to choose from everywhere in the steeet.

One of the most impressing monuments of the capital is the Memorial of the Military Glory can be found on Pan Halippa Street.. It is situated in the area of the Military memorial cemetery, in the downtown. The monument has been built in memory of the soldiers, who have perished in action for Chisinau deliverance from fascist aggressors during the World War II (1941-45).

The museum is located in the historical center of Chisinau.In front of there is a monument to Latin She-Wolf with Romul and Rem, replica of the Roman statue. The exhibition  is divided into several sections: Archaeology and Ancient History, History of the Middle Ages, Besarabian History, Modern History and Treasures.
National Museum of History of Moldova has at its disposal a collection containing about 300 thousand of objects of a great historical value: archeological finds, documents, photographs, numismatics, popular arts and crafts. Over 165 thousand of Museum’s exhibits are the National Treasure of Moldova. Annually about 15 special exhibitions on different subjects are organized at the Museum.

Museum of Ethnography and NatureImage

Museum of Ethnography and Nature is the first Moldavian museum. It was founded in 1889 by baron Steward, and during the 20th century it used to be the laboratory for the local scientists: F. Ostermann, S. Miller, F. Porouchik, I. Sukhov, B. Taraboukhin, M. Pocoara and others.
Building of the Museum was constructed in 1905, and its Oriental style is unique in Moldova. For the years Museum has been maintaining two basic directions of its scientific effort: ethnology and natural history. Now it is famous for its geological, paleontological, zoological, entomological, archaeological, ethnographical and numismatic collections. Among the thousand of Museum’s exhibits there is set up the entire Dinoterium Gigantisimus skeleton, as well as the famous archaeological treasures, Bessarabian carpets of the 19th century etc. Museum’s collections are periodically exhibited in the museums of Europe, America, Asia and Africa as the cultural heritage of the Republic of Moldova.

Museum of Archaeology and Ethnography Image

The first archaeological exhibition in Moldova was organized in 1958 withindoors of local Academy of Science. In 1977 about 800 thousand of exhibits were moved to the 19th century building in the historical center of Chisinau.
Each showroom describes a certain stage of historical development: paleolith, mesolite, late Stone Age, Bonze Age, Iron Age. There are several quite impressive panoramas arranged for the visitors.

At present time the museum’s collection contains over 30 thousand of art objects.
Museum possesses a rich collection of Moldavian fine arts (painting, drawing, sculpture, arts and crafts), which covers the period from Middle Ages till the present days.
Collection of medieval Moldavian iconography deserves a special attention. Ancient icons, books and manuscripts give the visitors the idea of Christianity development on the territory of Moldova and its place in Moldavian culture.
There are permanent exhibitions of Russian, European and Oriental art at the museum. Russian fine art is represented by the works of I. Ivanov, I. Repin, V. Perov, A. Savrasov, I. Shishkin, I. Ayvazovsky. The collection of European painting of the 16-18th century will be of great interest for the connoisseurs of the creations of P. Gobert, Rembrandt van Rijn, F. Bowcher, P. Gavarni, A. Renoire and others. The collection of Japanese colored prints of the 17-19th century (Kitagawa Utamaro, Ando Hirosige, Utagawa Kunisada) is set out at the Oriental art exhibition
