Chisinau is the capital of Moldova situated in the very center of country (also called “the White City”, as many of the older building are of white limestone). The first historic evidence of the name Chisinau goes back to July 17 1436. The name derives from a word meaning “spring”. Chisinau is positioned on the seven hills and stretches over 120 km2 The capital is crossed by two rivers –Bik and Isnovat. Chisinau counts almost one million citizens. It is situated in the area with mild, moderate-continental climate, under the Black Sea nearness influence. The City is divided into 5 sectors: Centre, Buiucani, Botanica, Riscani and Ciocana and has its own flag and coat of arms. Chisinau is the main administrative, economic, scientific and cultural center of the Republic of Moldova. Its industry has more than 34 500 legal entities, the enterprises of mechanical, apparatus, engineering, electronics, jewelry, light, and food industries, woodworking industry and production of furniture, processing of natural leather and production of artificial leather, printing industry. Many enterprises were converted into limited companies. After the privatization the state enterprises only constitute 5,9 percent of their whole quantity. Many joint ventures have appeared, among their founders - the juridical persons from Germany, Italy, Romania, Bulgaria, Holland, Belgium, Turkey, Russia, Ukraine and Byelorussia. Nowadays the goods produced in Moldova are bought by more than 80 countries of the world. In addition to the wines, produced in Chisinau and Cricova and recognized all over the world and preserved food of vegetables and fruits, the high mark has also been given to vacuum pumps, tractors, TV sets, washing machines, carpets, hosiery articles, sweets, cosmetics and perfume, volatile oils, clothes as well as the wide assortment of the meat and dairy products. All the banks of the capital (except National Bank) were renewed into commercial and stockholder banks, their total quantity is more than 25 units. The monument has been built in memory of the soldiers, who have perished in action for Chisinau deliverance from fascist aggressors during the World War II (1941-45). There are several museums in Chisinau that a tourist should definitely visit: National Museum of History of Moldova (1987) The museum is located in the historical center of Chisinau.In front of there is a monument to Latin She-Wolf with Romul and Rem, replica of the Roman statue. The exhibition is divided into several sections: Archaeology and Ancient History, History of the Middle Ages, Besarabian History, Modern History and Treasures. Address: 31 of August 1989 str., 121-A Museum of Ethnography and Nature Museum of Ethnography and Nature is the first Moldavian museum. It was founded in 1889 by baron Steward, and during the 20th century it used to be the laboratory for the local scientists: F. Ostermann, S. Miller, F. Porouchik, I. Sukhov, B. Taraboukhin, M. Pocoara and others. Museum of Archaeology and Ethnography The first archaeological exhibition in Moldova was organized in 1958 withindoors of local Academy of Science.
